Live on the Wild Side This National Zoo and Aquarium Month

Jun 22, 2021

Did you know that June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month? It just so happens that there are some amazing zoos and aquariums right here in Baltimore! It’s the perfect opportunity to go explore some of Baltimore’s beautiful flora and fauna.

National Zoo and Aquarium Month

National Zoo and Aquarium Month was created by President Ronald Regan in 1982 as a nod to our country’s beautiful zoos and aquariums. Not only are they a fun place to spend a Saturday afternoon, but many of these sites are also important centers for animal conservation and education on the importance of protecting our natural world. You can learn something new, take in the beautiful natural scenery, and enjoy plenty of photo ops!

So, this month, celebrate and indulge your inner child by taking a visit to our local zoo and aquarium!

The National Aquarium O-fish-ally Rocks

Baltimore is home to the National Aquarium––and it’s less than a 10 minute drive from your apartment home here at Anthem House! The aquarium is home to over 20,000 fishes, birds, amphibians, reptiles and marine mammals, many of which have been rescued and rehabilitated.

They have lots of unique special events for visitors to enjoy. Each Friday, admission is half price. It’s the perfect date night activity or place to bring friends visiting from out of town! You can check out their award-winning habitats and exhibits, from rad jellyfish to awesome sharks. You can even take a stroll through their immersive tropical rainforest and discover slots, frogs, and monkeys galore. Learn more about their many exhibits here. The National Aquarium also has some fantastic tours and experiences to try. Learn how to train a dolphin, or come face-to-face with a reptile. Feeling brave? Try the shark catwalk, where you travel just inches above the aquarium’s incredible sharks. Check out the full list of experiences here.

Get Wild at The Maryland Zoo

The Maryland Zoo has been a community staple since 1876, making it the third oldest zoo in the country! Since then, their mission has been “engage people with the wonder of the living world” and to “inspire and educate people to join with it in the active support and conservation of wild life and wild places.” With over 135 acres of land and countless exhibits, you can travel from the African safari to the chilly arctic, all right here in Baltimore.

You’ve heard of goat yoga, but what about yoga at the zoo? The zoo offers a unique yoga experience where you can get a sweat on and connect to nature. You can hang out with penguins at Penguin Cove or take in majestic, awe-inspiring sights at the Lion Overlook. Speaking of penguins, another great event to check out is the zoo’s penguin feeding time, a 15-minute show that you can catch twice daily. If you prefer to be the one doing the dining, you can sign up for Sip and Stroll. Your ticket includes your choice of beer, wine, or soda as well as a delicious food truck meal. During the guided tour, you will learn about the zoo animals’ feeding habits and what goes into creating an animal’s diet.

Ready to plan your visit? You can head to their website for everything you need to know before you go.
