Activities to Try this Winter in Baltimore

Jan 20, 2021

It can be difficult to avoid cabin fever in the winter, and since we’re all staying indoors more than usual during the pandemic, this year is definitely no exception. To help our Anthem House residents beat the winter blues and find fun ways to spend these long winter days, we’ve gathered some fantastic local events and activities, both virtual and in-person. Keep reading to find out more!

Virtual Events

Doing your part and staying indoors doesn’t have to be boring! Local businesses have gotten creative and found some really neat ways to bring fun activities right to your apartment with virtual classes, events and more.

This has to be the coolest event in town: the Virtual Harbor Point Ice Fest! This year, the annual event is bringing ice carving right to your home through live streams, starting at 8am on January 23rd. Watch master ice carvers create unbelievable works of art, and even vote for your favorite.

Get chilly for a cause with the Virtual Polar Bear Plunge. This annual fundraiser raises money for the Maryland Special Olympics. Since the event is virtual for 2021, you can choose from a ton of different ways to plunge, from dumping a cup of icy water on yourself in your apartment, to taking an ice bath, to an “Animal Crossing Plunge.” You can submit a video of your own personal Polar Plunge to their social media pages anytime through the end of January.

If your New Year’s resolution was to incorporate more movement and mindfulness into your day, virtual fitness and health classes are perfect. During Yoga On The Square, you can join a yoga instructor for a free, hour-long yoga flow class every Wednesday evening from 7-8pm. It’s a perfect midweek pick-me-up! Or, try something new like Quigong, sometimes called “energy yoga.” Learn how to nourish your body and protect your energy with a focus on vitality and longevity. Classes are held via Zoom on Tuesday nights from 7-8pm.

Tired of the same old, boring dinners? The One Pot Series is a great opportunity to sharpen your chef skills and learn a new recipe! These virtual cooking classes are hosted by Cooking With Pat & Nat. Simply pre-register to the event, gather the ingredients and tools, and get ready to cook (and, of course, eat a delicious new meal). Schola is also hosting virtual cooking classes, featuring a variety of mouthwatering recipes from Italian Sunday suppers, to pizza, to winter pastas.

If you’re feeling inspired this winter, try writing poetry! Writing poetry is an incredible way to share your experiences and get your feelings down on paper, whether you choose to share it or not. You can learn some tips from the experts at the Be True to You Poetry Workshop, hosted virtually over Zoom by the Enoch Pratt Free Library. Mark your calendar for 3:45-4:45pm on Friday, January 22nd.

Indulge your inner child with a virtual field trip to the zoo! The Mayland Zoo in Baltimore is hosting a talk all about African Penguins on January 27th from noon-1pm. We think that’s a pretty fun way to spend your lunch break.

Or, learn how to bring the outdoors in with Propagating Plants with Hilton Carter. This virtual class is featured on Baltimore’s Airbnb page, and you can learn all about how to grow new plants and fill your apartment with gorgeous greenery. You can even participate in a Q&A with the local host.

In-Person Events

If you do plan to spend some time outdoors this winter, there are also lots of fun things happening around town. Each event has special protocol for social distancing and COVID safety, so don’t forget to mask up before your adventure!

Stock up on fresh, local produce and discover amazing handmade goods at the Fell’s Point Farmers Market. The market is open every Saturday from 9am-12:30pm, just a few blocks away from Anthem.

Another awesome way to spend some time outdoors and try something new is Ice Skating at the Four Seasons. Ice skating is such a fun, classic winter activity––plus, it’s a great workout! You can make a reservation ahead of time via their website, which will get you a slot on the rink and rental skates, as well as access to their Winter Village with music, food and beverages and more.

Don’t let those trivia skills fade this winter! Charm City Trivia Tuesdays are still on, starting January 29th from 7:30-9:30pm. You’ll have the chance to win merch, gift cards, beer and more!

One thing that can help in the winter is to get a change of scenery. You might think of summer as the time for road trips and travel, but there are lots of gorgeous sights to take in during colder days as well! For example, take a visit to Wisp Resort. At the resort, they offer tons of activities like snow tubing, skiing, snowboarding and more. If you’ve never skied before, you can even sign up for lessons.
