Summertime in Baltimore: Our Favorite Things!

Jul 11, 2022

Here in Baltimore, we love to celebrate the sun all summer long. If you’re looking for summer fun, but aren’t sure where to start, check out our guide to having a quintessential Baltimore summer.

The Baltimore Summertime Treat

You may at first think that these are actually snowcones or Italian ice, but snowballs are a Baltimore treat! These icy treats circle back to the industrial revolution when ice shavings would be used to cool down during the hot summer as a treat. Soon enough, flavorings were added, as well as the Baltimore staple to snowballs–marshmallow cream.

Snowballs can be found closest to Anthem House at Ice Queens, located right here in Locust Point. Opened by Dasia Kabia mid-pandemic, her snowballs are all made with vegan-friendly ingredients and feature classic flavors like Egg Custard, as well as some new treats, like Strawberry Cheesecake.

For a truly traditional Baltimore snowball, check out Icy Delights in Brewer’s Hill. They have been open since 1992, and also serve ice cream along with their deluxe snowballs. For their 30th anniversary, they are also giving a 30% discount on all orders on the 30th of each month this year!

Quality Snowballs offers gourmet snowballs in Hampden, 7 days a week! Some treats they offer are their fried ice cream snowball and s’mores snowball, complete with toasted marshmallow on top.

Root for the Home Team

Summer is the perfect time to head over to a baseball game, with hot dogs from Stuggys, cool lemonade, and of course, Natty Boh. The Orioles have an event on July 24, where you can even bring canned goods and/or monetary donations that will all be put forward to benefit the Maryland Food Bank.

Unchartered Waters

The water taxi is a staple for Baltimore summer fun! It is one of the best ways to get around town this season and you can enjoy a refreshing breeze along the scenic Inner Harbor. All day tickets for the services can be used on any route and last the entire day. Try their BYO twilight cruise, where you are free to bring your own drinks and food to enjoy for an hour on the water!

Movie Nights

Movies can be seen as a summer staple for some, but a unique movie experience can be found at Flicks on the Hill. The American Visionary Art Museum shows movies at Federal Hill Park for their “under the stars” series on Thursdays in July. Be sure to bring a blanket or chairs and pack yourself a nice picnic for the full movie watching experience under the stars.

Beach Volleyball in the City

Head on down to the nearby Baltimore beach to drop in and play Volleyball on the weekends, or you can watch an organized match from one of several leagues. There are also general skill clinics to attend if you want to improve your skills. While you’re there, enjoy some amazing views of the harbor.

Get Crabby

Maryland, and especially Baltimore, has a lot of love for crabs. They’re one of the biggest attractions for Baltimore, which was once the primary source for Blue Crabs in the 1800s. Crab is such a staple, that Baltimore’s cuisine is known for its combination of steamed Maryland crabs and Old Bay seasoning, and crab picking is a rite of passage.

For some delicious crab, check out the crab deck at Captain James Landing. Be sure to try their famous cream of crab soup prior to your steamed crabs. This is the place to go for a bonafide Baltimore crab experience right on the water.

Opt Outside for Beverages

There are some outdoor bars nearby that are a fantastic opportunity to have a drink whilst enjoying the summer sun. Little Havanas is the closest spot to Anthem House, with the mojito as their signature drink, served up with a wonderful view of the harbor. You won’t want to miss their Sunday Brunch.

Sandlot Baltimore is open every weekend. This smoke-free establishment is also dog friendly, and they are located right on the water in Harbor Point. Sandlot is also hosting a BBQ luau on the beach on July 23rd, and tickets include a welcome drink! Be sure to try one of their signature slushies.

Another outdoor bar on the water is Ouzo Beach, featuring a Mediterranean villa-inspired interior that transports you from Baltimore to Greece. Enjoy sipping on one of their cocktails while listening to live music on weekends. For the tequila lover, their Mykonos Ruins cocktail is a great change-up from the classic margarita.

Enjoy Summer

Whether you’re relaxing by the Anthem House pool, or exploring everything Baltimore has to offer in the summertime, we hope you have a great season!
